Point Stuart Road serves as a vital link connecting Darwin communities to coastal fishing, boating and the Stuart Points War Memorial. The original narrow single-lane track faced severe flooding during the wet season, creating significant safety risks whilst limiting tourist and recreational access. ADG’s collaborative engineering transformed 30 kilometres of vulnerable rural road into a resilient two-lane corridor designed for Top End conditions. ADG collaborated with the Northern Territory Government to transform Point Stuart Road from a desperately needed upgrade into a resilient two-lane rural road serving growing tourist and recreational demands.
Our comprehensive civil engineering scope delivered survey, geotechnical investigation and detailed design improving wet season access to the existing boat ramp whilst realigning 4 kilometres of road within cadastral boundaries and upgrading sections through pastoral lease areas requiring land acquisition.
Detailed flood modelling formed the foundation of our design approach, analysing existing road performance and determining upgrade requirements. The stormwater modelling informed solutions providing flood-free access to properties and the boat ramp during the wet season whilst supporting analysis of the Swim Creek crossing performance. This data-driven methodology enabled optimised earthworks design, minimising imported fill requirements and delivering significant cost savings for the client.
The Swim Creek crossing upgrade addressed a culturally significant sacred site area through sensitive concept design, cost estimation and detailed engineering. Our solution removed the existing single-lane crossing and reconstructed a dual carriageway crossing with raised levels improving immunity. Multiple large cell culverts, guardrail installation, advanced warning signage and realigned approaches enhanced both flood performance and safety through improved geometry and sight distance.
Cultural sensitivity guided every design decision. ADG developed solutions promoting safe driving environments without disturbing sacred sites within Restricted Work Areas, maintaining respectful collaboration with Traditional Owners throughout the project. Materials sourced locally from Traditional Owners required design adaptations responding to gravel quality variations, demonstrating our flexible, responsive approach to local conditions.
The comprehensive scope included full civil engineering to DIPL standards, stakeholder coordination, cost estimation, alternative design analysis and locally sourced materials supporting regional economic outcomes.
Delivered on time and budget, ADG’s flood-immune design significantly enhanced Point Stuart Road safety. The Swim Creek crossing upgrade halved inundation depths, reducing flooding by 0.6 metres for 1-in-1-year storms and 1.8 metres for 1-in-100-year storms. Through collaborative stakeholder partnerships, the upgrade increased tourist and fishing access opportunities whilst achieving project goals and delivering value for money for the Northern Territory Government.
