Within Queensland’s largest urban renewal precinct, ADG delivered the climate-resilient road, drainage and utility backbone supporting the transformation of Northshore Hamilton. The project overcame complex geotechnical conditions across reclaimed riverfront land while creating sustainable, people-focused streets designed for future climate conditions.

As lead consultant for Economic Development Queensland, ADG engineered an award-winning road network that achieved Australia’s first Infrastructure Sustainability Council v2.1 Silver rating for a road project, delivered a 76% urban canopy target, and established a 100-year climate resilience framework for Brisbane’s largest riverfront renewal precinct.

Critical Engineering Challenges

Engineering on Reclaimed Riverfront Land

The site contains deep marine clays and uncontrolled historical fill, requiring tailored ground improvement strategies to reduce consolidation timeframes from approximately two years to just three to six months.

Protecting Critical Infrastructure

New roads and drainage infrastructure had to be constructed over existing trunk sewer assets at depths of 7 to 9 metres while maintaining full operational integrity. Advanced Plaxis modelling demonstrated infrastructure performance under future loading conditions.

Climate-Proofing a Future Precinct

The project established new engineering benchmarks through advanced urban heat modelling, a 76% canopy target and climate resilience planning extended to the year 2150, significantly beyond industry norms.

As lead consultant, ADG managed an extensive multidisciplinary team and delivered integrated road, drainage, utility and public realm infrastructure through:

  • Concurrent design with master planning, survey and geotechnical investigations
  • Advanced ground improvement and settlement-responsive engineering
  • Extensive Plaxis modelling of complex subsurface conditions
  • Coordination of 582 bio-filtration basins within a unified 12D digital model
  • New Brisbane City Council standards aligning tree canopy with road lighting requirements
  • Integrated Water Sensitive Urban Design protecting Moreton Bay
  • Active transport infrastructure including GreenWave cycling technology
  • Climate resilience assessment to a 2150 horizon

The result is a connected, climate-ready transport network forming the backbone of Northshore’s next generation waterfront community.

Sustainability

Australia’s first IS v2.1 Silver-rated road project combined 582 bio-filtration basins, low-carbon materials, recycled asphalt and a 76% urban canopy target to create measurable environmental outcomes and improved thermal comfort.

Climate Resilience

ADG pioneered two Queensland State-First innovations, including advanced urban heat modelling and a climate resilience assessment extending to 2150, establishing a verified 100-year design life.

Digital Engineering

The project utilised 12D digital coordination, Plaxis modelling and integrated multidisciplinary design processes to manage 853 civil drawings and complex infrastructure interfaces across the precinct.
